About Shows and Auctions

Two kinds of events have always set the rhythm of the car world: shows where new metal is unveiled and auctions where old metal finds new owners. Both are part spectacle and part business, a place to see a concept car under the lights or watch a bidding war push a muscle car past a number that would buy a house. This page follows the calendar of auto shows, concours and auctions and the news that comes out of them.

The great motor shows grew up with the industry. Paris, Geneva, Frankfurt, Tokyo and Detroit were for decades where automakers staged their biggest debuts. In the United States, collector auctions became a television event, with Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale sale and Mecum's huge Kissimmee auction opening each year. The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, held during Monterey Car Week each August, became the pinnacle of judged elegance, while Britain's Goodwood Festival of Speed proved that fans would rather see cars run up a hill than sit on a turntable.

The landscape has shifted. Many automakers now prefer online reveals and their own events, several of the traditional international motor shows have shrunk, moved or disappeared, and the trade-focused SEMA Show in Las Vegas has become the aftermarket's great gathering. Auctions have moved online too, with timed digital sales attracting younger bidders and modern collectibles from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. Record prices still make headlines, and so do sales of celebrity cars and one-offs.

Coverage here includes show debuts and concept cars, auction previews and results, record sales, concours winners and the shifting economics of the events themselves. It is a good place to watch both where the industry is going and what enthusiasts are willing to pay for where it has been. For buyers and sellers alike, these events also set the market, since a strong result at a headline auction can lift values for an entire model overnight, while a quiet sale can signal that a once-hot collectible has cooled.
