About Desmo450
For a company famous for red superbikes and MotoGP glory, the Desmo450 is a bold leap into the mud. It is Ducati's first production motocross bike, built around a 450cc single-cylinder engine that uses the brand's signature desmodromic valve system, which closes valves mechanically instead of relying on springs. The idea is to bring Ducati's road-racing know-how to one of the most competitive classes in motorcycling. It is also a statement that Ducati wants to be taken seriously beyond the asphalt.
The Desmo450 MX was developed with input from Italian motocross star Antonio Cairoli, a multiple world champion, and has been raced in motocross championships as Ducati builds its credibility off road. The project marks a serious entry into a segment long dominated by Japanese and Austrian manufacturers, where reliability, light weight and race results drive sales more than heritage. Off-road buyers are a skeptical crowd, loyal to brands they trust on a race weekend, and Ducati knows its badge alone will not win them over.
The platform is already expanding. A supermoto version, the Desmo450 SM, extends the engine to the street-and-track crossover crowd, and the MX has been updated with more technical refinements for its next model year. The Desmo450 competes with the Honda CRF450R, Yamaha YZ450F, Kawasaki KX450, Suzuki RM-Z450 and KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas bikes from the Pierer group. This page follows the Desmo450's updates, racing results, first rides, image galleries and Ducati's wider push into off-road and supermoto motorcycles.
