About Continental GT

The Continental GT is the car that saved Bentley. When it arrived in 2003, the first all-new Bentley developed under Volkswagen ownership, it combined a sleek coupe body, a twin-turbocharged W12 engine, all-wheel drive and a hand-finished cabin at a price that, while high, undercut a Rolls-Royce by a wide margin. It sold in numbers no Bentley had ever approached, and it became the car of choice for footballers, rappers and successful entrepreneurs around the world.

Its name recalls the R-Type Continental of 1952, one of the great grand tourers, and the modern car has stayed true to that brief: cross continents quickly and in comfort. The second generation of 2011 refined the formula, and the third, of 2018, moved to a platform shared with the Porsche Panamera and sharpened its handling considerably. The fourth generation, introduced in 2024, said farewell to the W12 and introduced a V8 plug-in hybrid with more power than ever and the ability to drive short distances in silence.

The GTC convertible offers the same experience with the roof down, and Speed, Azure and Mulliner versions span the range from sporting to sumptuous. A new Supersports revives a famous name with a lighter, more focused coupe and convertible for owners who want to play. Rivals include the Aston Martin DB12 and Vanquish, Ferrari Roma and its successor, Mercedes-AMG SL, Porsche 911 Turbo S and the Rolls-Royce Spectre. Few cars combine a four-seat cabin and continental range with this much speed.

Bentley also uses the Continental for its most imaginative one-offs, including cars inspired by the sun, earth and moon, and for limited editions celebrating anniversaries and markets. The coverage collected here includes reviews and comparison tests, Supersports and Mulliner news, special editions, retail and pricing changes, recalls, and the used-car stories that show how quickly early Continentals have become affordable, if not cheap to run. The car's next chapter will show how far Bentley can push electrification without losing the soul that made the original a hit.
