About Bentayga
When Bentley revealed the Bentayga in 2015, it became one of the first ultra-luxury brands to build an SUV, beating Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini and Aston Martin to market. The idea of a Bentley off-roader made purists wince, but customers loved it, and it quickly became the brand's best-selling model. It borrowed its underpinnings from the Volkswagen Group's large SUV platform shared with the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, then wrapped them in hand-stitched leather, wood veneers and an imposing body.
The Bentayga launched with a W12 engine, later adding a V8, a diesel in some markets and a V6 plug-in hybrid. A 2020 facelift improved the styling and cabin, and the Extended Wheelbase version added more rear legroom and Airline seats that recline almost flat. The W12 left the range in 2024 along with the rest of Bentley's twelve-cylinder engines. Reviewers praise its ride, refinement and off-road ability; critics note its weight, thirst and price, and some find its styling heavy.
The Bentayga competes with the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Lamborghini Urus, Aston Martin DBX, Mercedes-Maybach GLS, Range Rover SV and the Mercedes-AMG G63. Buyers who want something smaller or electric will soon have the Torcal, which sits below it in Bentley's range. The Bentayga's next steps are likely to include more electrification, though Bentley has slowed its original timetable for going fully electric. That leaves the Bentayga as the brand's combustion-powered flagship SUV for the foreseeable future, and the car that pays for much of Bentley's ambition.
Market news matters for this car, from price cuts in India after a free-trade agreement with Britain to tariffs on cars sent to America. The coverage here tracks reviews and comparisons with rival luxury SUVs, special and Mulliner editions, pricing and launches by market, the brand's electric plans and recall notices that affect the Bentayga family. Used Bentaygas have also become a popular entry into the brand, though running costs remain firmly at the luxury end of the scale.
