About Saga and X50

The Saga is more than a car in Malaysia; it is a piece of national history. The first one, launched in 1985 and based on a Mitsubishi Lancer, was the country's first homegrown automobile, and the nameplate has been the affordable family sedan of choice for millions of Malaysians ever since. The current generation has been refreshed several times, most recently with sharper styling and updated equipment, and it still delivers the simple promise that made the name famous: a proper sedan at a price almost anyone can manage.

The X50 represents the other half of Proton's revival. A compact crossover based on Geely's Binyue, sold in other markets as the Coolray, it arrived in 2020 with a turbocharged engine, a modern dual-clutch gearbox and a level of technology that would have seemed impossible from Proton only a few years earlier. It quickly became one of the country's best-selling SUVs, and a substantial facelift refreshed its styling and cabin to keep it competitive against a growing army of Chinese and Japanese rivals.

Together the two models cover the core of the Malaysian market. The Saga fights Perodua's Bezza for first-time and budget buyers, and the two often trade places near the top of the national sales table. The X50 competes with Perodua's Ativa, Honda's HR-V and WR-V, Toyota's Yaris Cross and a fast-growing roster of Chinese crossovers. Both are also central to Proton's export ambitions in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, where value matters above all.

This page follows facelifts, special editions, price changes, sales rankings, design awards and export news, plus owner reviews and comparisons. Watch for how Proton refreshes the aging Saga and how the X50 holds its ground as electric models such as the e.MAS 5 begin to compete for the same buyers in Proton's own showrooms. Proton has also set up its own financing arm to help buyers into these cars, a reminder that in Malaysia's price-sensitive market, the monthly payment is often what closes the deal.

Saga and X50

Proton's two pillars: the Saga, Malaysia's budget sedan since 1985, and the Geely-based X50 compact SUV that helped revive the brand.
